Serena Williams Defeats Maria Sharapova For The 17th Time To Reach Wimbledon Final

For the 17th time in a row, Maria Sharapova proved to be no match for Serena Williams. Serena inched closer to winning a fourth consecutive Grand Slam title this afternoon when she handily defeated Maria 6-2, 6-4 to reach her eighth Wimbledon final.

The media has often referred to Serena and Maria’s showdowns as a rivalry, but Serena’s scorecard against Maria indicates anything but.
Since defeating Serena twice in 2004, Maria hasn’t won a single match against Serena in 11 years. In fact, Serena now leads Maria 18-2 in their on-court meetings.
If Serena wins the final against 21-year-old GarbiƱe Muguruza on Saturday, not only will she have successfully completed another “Serena Slam” (holding all four Grand Slam titles at the same time), but she’ll become the oldest woman to ever win a Grand Slam.
Even more, with a win on Saturday, she’ll be one title from completing her very first Calendar Gram Slam (winning all four Grand Slam tournaments in the same year) and matching Steffi Graf’s Open era record of 22 Grand Slam titles.
We’re rooting for you, Serena!
